HARARE – A meeting has been organised by the Human Rights Forum Zimbabwe to call on the government to ratify both the Convention against Torture and the Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
The meeting has been scheduled for March 12 in Geneva and is co-sponsored by Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, the World Students Christian Federation, The Zimbabwe Advocacy Office, the Zimbabwe Europe Network and Connectas.
“The first anniversary of the formation of Zimbabwe’s Government of National Unity presents an opportunity for the new government to turn the corner on state sponsored politically motivated violence and demonstrate its commitment to protecting and promoting human rights,” reads a flyer for the event.
Guest speakers include the Chair-Rapporteur UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, Dr. Jeremy Sarkin; the Special Rapporteur on torture, Professor Manfred Nowak; the Executive Director of Zimbabwe Human Rights Forum, Abel Chikomo; a representative from the same organisation’s public interest unit, Susan Mutambasere and a Zimbabwean human rights lawyer, Dewa Mavhinga.
